Audit Your Circle, Do A Friendventory

Audit Your Circle, Do A Friendventory

Dan Martell, has a concept I’ve grown to love: the “friendventory.” Simply put, it’s an audit of your relationships to assess whether the people around you are lifting you up or holding you back.

This idea stuck with me because, because I come to realize, thanks to Dan, that the people closest to us shape how we think, act, and grow. And its so true! Our environment acts like an internal thermostat, setting the “temperature” for our mindset, energy, and ambitions. Positive affirmations and good intentions are great, but if your circle is full of negativity, doubt, or complacency, it’s going to be an uphill battle.

In my own journey, I’ve seen firsthand how our environment acts as an internal thermostat. The people we surround ourselves with can either elevate our mindset and ambitions or quietly sabotage our growth.

A friendventory is about more than just removing the toxic influences in your life, but about creating space for the right ones. By consciously evaluating who you surround yourself with, you can identify relationships that might be draining your energy or holding you back and make intentional decisions about who gets a seat at your table.

Here’s what I’ve learned through my own experience:

Your circle reflects your trajectory. If you’re constantly surrounded by people who challenge you, inspire you, and share your drive, that energy becomes contagious. But if your circle is stuck in negativity or a fixed mindset, it can weigh you down, no matter how motivated you are. Spend a day with someone driven, kind, and forward-thinking, and you’ll feel inspired. Spend a day with someone negative or complacent, and you’ll feel drained. It’s that simple.

The right environment fosters growth. Like plants need sunlight and water, we need a nurturing environment to thrive. People who believe in you, hold you accountable, and push you to grow are like fertilizer for your personal and professional development.

Letting go is hard but necessary. Sometimes, doing a friendventory means having tough conversations or even stepping back from relationships that no longer align with your goals. This isn’t easy, but it’s one of the most important steps you can take for your growth. Sometimes, the hardest part of a “friendventory” is realizing that comfort isn’t always good for you. Relationships that don’t challenge or inspire you may feel easy, but they often keep you stuck.

So how do you start? Dan Martell suggests regularly auditing your relationships by asking questions like:

  • Does this person challenge me to improve?

  • Do they celebrate my wins without envy?

  • Are they aligned with the values I hold dear?

And let’s be honest, this is not easy. I know coz I did it, its a tough decision to make. Stepping back from relationships that don’t serve you or seeking out new connections that push you forward. But in the long run, the impact is undeniable.

For me, auditing my my friends (and even my family) has been a game-changer. It’s not just about removing the toxic influences, it’s about intentionally adding the right ones. People who inspire me, support me, and hold me accountable. Finding people who match my energy and help me level up completely transformed the trajectory of my life.

The bottom line is your environment matters more than you think. A supportive circle can amplify your energy and help you thrive, while the wrong one can quietly deplete your potential.

So here’s my challenge for you as we head into a new week (and a new month soon): take your own “friendventory.” Evaluate your inner circle and ask yourself if your environment is truly setting you up for success. Audit your inner circle, reflect on the energy around you, and make the conscious choice to invest in relationships that bring out your best self.

Let’s make sure we’re all setting our thermostats to “growth.”
